Your completely right about SCCM. Configuration Management is quite normal in non IT industries. It is astonishing to see that software developers still want to put themselves outside the real world and deny the benefits of CCM. Many CM professionals share your thoughts and have joined their expertise in the iNTCCM association (see www.intccm.org). The iNTCCM is a non profit organisation by and for CM professionals and is supported by very large organisation such as Thales. The lack of one standard approach or method for CM, resulted in the iNTCCM Foundation scheme, which can be used to certify CM professionals and to use a common view on CM. I am the current president of the organisation and invite you to read more about it on the website.
